Volunteers play a vital role in the heart and soul of our programs! Galería de la Raza is continuously looking for generous individuals to take part in our ongoing calendar of events and programs. By joining us as a volunteer, you get to experience our events and programs from an exciting behind-the-scenes viewpoint, as well as interact with a community of arts appreciators.
Volunteers must align with Galería’s mission to work towards social inclusion and justice, centering community arts to navigate the complex intersection of urban development, social inequality, affordable housing, and the historical-cultural legacies of communities of color (racial, gender, and LGBTQ equity). Volunteers must have experience and comfortability working with people of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations, and abilities. Volunteers must display flexibility, social emotional intelligence, and conflict management skills as well have the ability to work well in a team setting and have strong problem solving skills.
Any individual volunteering with Galería de la Raza will be required to sign a basic volunteer expectations form, the waiver form and complete emergency contact form prior to starting volunteer shift. You must be 18 years or older to volunteer at Galería de la Raza!
Volunteers are expected to communicate any accommodations needed in advance of confirming a volunteer shift. Volunteers are not allowed to come in if they are feeling mentally or physically unwell, we can always reschedule your volunteering hours. Lastly, Galería de la Raza has the right to cancel any volunteer shift it sees fit.
Some physical demands include but are not restricted to:
- Volunteers must be able to lift up to 50 LBS.
- Activities that occur frequently are climbing, bending, squatting, crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching straight, above or below shoulders
- Requires physical ability to stand for long periods of time
- Requires physical ability to remain seated at a desk for long periods of time when needed
- General alertness to address emergency or potentially dangerous situations
- Understands and is capable of practicing de-escalation if needed
General volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to the following:
Events: Set-up + breakdown before and after performances, openings, and additional events. Learn how to assist in running events such as exhibition opening events, our monthly Lunada, and community panels.
Gallery Attendant: Gallery attendants are the first interaction our visitors are met with in our space. Attendants support with welcoming and greeting visitors, maintenance of the gallery space, providing information about the organization and what the visitor can expect.
Marketing: We always need a hardy dose of enthusiasm and a ready smile to help us distribute postcards and flyers around the Mission District and beyond for events happening at Galería.
