Carlos Loarca was born in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala in 1937, and moved to San Francisco’s Mission District in 1956. Loarca was a founding member of Galería de la Raza and worked closely with the Galería during its early years. Loarca was the director of the art gallery at the Mission Cultural Center and was the gallery director at SOMARTS.
