Bio & Project Information
Joey Gomez is a queer Chicanx ceramics artist based in the Mission District of San Francisco. He has been dedicated to ceramics for 6 years in which he has been able to develop a comprehensive understanding of the craft and its extraordinary possibilities. His work utilizes natural and industrial elements to share a story, or theme, of intentionality, and connectedness of the land, its occupants, and our individual as well as collective life force in the act of healing. Gomez creates in hopes to connect audiences to the story and experiences of queer brown individuals and to build community. He is so grateful to have been a part of the Artillery AG Collective for the last six years where he has participated in their offered artist programs, pop ups, community events and sharing clay knowledge. Gomez is working to further develop his artistic capabilities and explore the outcomes of adding wood as a medium in his work.
With the ReGen Artist Fund, Gomez will create a body of work through sculpting, wheel throwing and wood working to share a common story about the queer experience of having to create their own paths with little to no support systems while facing homophobia, stigma and discrimination. His project will show that through the act of survival, many build their own safe spaces, and rather than conforming and earning a seat at the table, they create their own table and make room for others to join us.
