Lorraine García-Nakata

Lorraine García-Nakata was born in 1950 in the central valley town of Yuba City, California. The 1960’s helped to shape what was to become of her artistic and professional work. She is a recognized visual artist and has exhibited since 1965 on a local, regional, national and international level.

Working a range of visual arts mediums, she is noted for her large-scale works on paper and canvas as well as mixed media, printmaking, installation work, ceramics and sculpture.

Since 1974, she has been a member of the world-renowned Sacramento Chicano artist collective, the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF). One of six RCAF original muralists, she painted the highly recognized and historical South Side Mural located in Sacramento, California.

In 2003, Lorraine García-Nakata was recognized for her artist achievement and awarded a California Arts Council Fellowship in the Visual Arts. In 2004, she was included as an RCAF artist in La Raza Galeria Posada’s Oral History Project funded by the California Council for the Humanities. Having dedicated her life to shaping public discourse of the creative process, cultural policy, education and community engagement, she is currently in the midst of authoring a book relaying her candid experiences as a third generation descendant whose grandparents came to the United States in 1914 during The Mexican Revolution. She lives and works in San Francisco.
