SUMMARY:ReGen Artist Fund: Queer Fandanguito Series by Evelyn Donají Arellano
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza is excited to present the Queer Fandanguito Series led by ReGen Artist Fund grantee Evelyn Donají Arellano with the Son Jarocho group Corazón de Cedro.  \n\n\n\nSon Jarocho is a lyrical-musical tradition from México’s Sotavento region with deep African\, Indigenous and Arab-Andalusian influences. The Fandango\, where Son Jarocho is played\, is a communal musical celebration rooted in resistance and collective liberation. Like many oral and folk traditions\, it passes down ancestral histories and knowledge while offering a structure for recording our own experiences.  \n\n\n\nOutside of México\, the Fandango has become a way for migrant communities to find and support one another. In the San Francisco Bay Area\, the melodies and rhythms of different diasporic musical traditions have become intertwined\, offering a common language for cross-cultural connection.  \n\n\n\nThe Queer Fandanguito Series invites us to queer the Fandango and imagine a tarima free of heteronormativity\, where queer dance expressions are celebrated. This musical series aims to foster meaningful connection\, cultural preservation\, and cross-border solidarities for our diasporic\, queer\, and femme communities.  \n\n\n\nJoin us Saturday\, June 14 in celebrating queer musical expressions while remaining rooted in the folk traditions of our homelands. May our traditions continue to restore our spirits and strengthen our fight for our peoples’ collective liberation. \n\n\n\nBring your instruments and dancing shoes and join us on the tarima. All levels of musical experience are welcomed!

SUMMARY:Exhibition- The Q-Sides: 10th Year Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza is pleased to present The Q-Sides: 10th Year Anniversary. This exhibition re-stages the East Side Story LP album covers Volumes 1-12 by centering queerness as the subjects of the popular vinyl collection of soul oldies in lowrider culture. The Q-Sides was conceived and created by Vero Majano\, Brown Angel\, and Kari Orvik.  \n\n\n\nOriginally presented in the Summer 2015\, The Q-Sides  challenged the long-held heteronormative exclusivity within the lowrider culture to unveil a queer presence. The Q-sides was part of a project series presented by Galería de la Raza that included Por Vida by Manuel Paul\, (a digital mural installation on the Bryant Street public art facing site) and the film Homeboy by Dino Dinco. \n\n\n\nThe polarizing reception these projects received transcended across local politics and social constructs\, vis-à-vis social media and presented an opportunity to address the violent erasure of queerness within the Latiné community while propelling Latiné aesthetic possibilities. Today\, the work is presented within a targeted national social-political context in which Queer and Trans existence is under attack. This ten year anniversary is a celebration of Queer resilience and as Jose Esteban Muñoz urges\, a “call for the revivification of the queer political imagination”.

SUMMARY:ReGen Artist Fund: SF Imprint by Isabella Gordillo
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza is excited to present SF Imprint\, a ReGen Artist Fund project by grantee Isabella Gordillo. \n\n\n\nSF Imprint is a photographic exploration of post-pandemic San Francisco. For many working-class residents\, this moment is defined by grief—not only the loss of loved ones\, but also time and opportunities. Despite sorrow\, joy persists and evolves. \n\n\n\nIt’s not hard to notice national and local media’s sensationalization of San Francisco’s current state. While people’s struggles to make ends meet\, find housing\, and survive are evident\, the headlines rarely convey the full gravity of these issues with understanding or asking why. In contrast\, SF Imprint examines moments of care and resilience—moments of environmental stewardship\, fighting for humanity\, or dancing in the streets. These moments of hope and solidarity are essential in setting a new standard for how the community is valued. \n\n\n\nThrough this zine project\, SF Imprint asks “What is the imprint we leave on the City? How do we honor ourselves and fight for our humanity?”. SF Imprint encourages you to be a participant and join in action and engagement with your community. \n\n\n\nJoin us on May 17 for the zine launch and photowalk led by Isabella Gordillo from Mission Dolores Park to Galería de la Raza Studio 24. The day will feature a guided photowalk and community reflection. Isabella will be joined by their mentor and photographic artist Janett Perez to provide an insightful overview of documentary photography and share her expertise. \n\n\n\n Following the photowalk\, a reception will be held at Galería de la Raza Studio 24 at 2:30 pm where you can relax\, enjoy food and refreshments\, and grab a copy of the SF Imprint zine. \n\n\n\nPhotowalk- 1:00 PMMission Dolores Park18th St. and Church St.(meet near the restrooms) \n\n\n\nZine Launch Reception- 2:30 PMGalería de la Raza Studio 242779 Folsom St. Suite ASan Francisco\, CA 94110

SUMMARY:Exhibition: From Fertile Lands Birthing Women Made of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza presents: From Fertile Lands Birthing Women Made of Flowers. This duo exhibition premieres a nine month individual body of work by Paola de la Calle and Sarai Montes as part of Galería’s 2024 ReGen Artist Fund grantees.  \n\n\n\nDe la Calle explores personal memory in conversations with queer elders Ester Hernández and Olga Talamante in her body of work Entre Nosotras. Recollecting memories through an oral history approach and observation of personal objects\, De la Calle dives into the personal journey these women have lived while active and in the center of cultural movements. In addition\, De la Calle researched academic archives which offered a historical perspective of the roles that Hernández and Talamante have taken to heart\, that of a visual artist and political activist respectively. This body of work juxtaposes their portraits with personal belongings\, offering an intimate perspective of who they are as individuals in their daily lives.  \n\n\n\nIn her body of work\, Corazón de la Revolución\, Montes pays tribute to seven revolutionary women: Fatima Bernawi\, Pua Case\, Melanie Cervantes\, Comandanta Esther\, María Sabina Magdalena García\, Ericka Huggins\, and Marsha P. Johnson. With Montes’ intentional use of the color brown\, we think of artist Linda Vallejo’s work where embracing brown is an act of resistance that challenges whiteness. Yet\, in Montes’ work she celebrates women of color and pays homage to their legacy as liberation leaders. Montes approaches this body of work intersectionally\, highlighting women from various social and liberation movements such as land rematriation\, indigenous sovereignty\, civil rights\, trans rights\, and cultural preservation.  \n\n\n\nPortraiture has historically been exclusive to the white elite as a way to cement historical accomplishment and importance\, yet in this exhibition\, we see their use of portraiture as an act of resistance. Above all\, De la Calle and Montes give these women their flowers and creates more encompassing portraits that expands our herstories and roots them into cultural memory. \n\n\n\nIn their work\, De la Calle and Montes gift us the act of reflection of our not so distant past. Furthermore\, De la Calle holds a mirror asking us to meditate on the continuous path towards liberation. What will we bequeath to the next generation? As women we embody liberation everyday and must remain grounded in an understanding of where we come from\, and honor our motherlands. \n\n\n\nDe la Calle’s poem affirms: \n\n\n\nWe did not come fromNothingWe are from treesRooted in ancient soilGrowing platanosThe color of goldFrom giant mountainsA lush greenFrom angryMountain mudslidesAnd devils arrivingBy seaFrom fertile landsBirthingWomenMadeOfFlowers

SUMMARY:Rooted: Exhibition by ReGen artist Xochitl Priscilla
DESCRIPTION:Rooted is a multidisciplinary group exhibition that presents a collection of artwork created by women that were born\, raised and reside in Frisco. This exhibition unearths and weaves the often absent female gaze to demonstrate the inextricable ties we hold to our environments\, inviting us to reflect on the connections to the places we call home. \n\n\n\nCalling to the familiar ficus trees planted in the 1980’s along 24th Street\, Rooted is a tapestry of personal narratives of the artists’ lived experiences and surroundings. These narratives are brought to life through a wide range of art mediums that reclaim the self and community memory. By observing the mundane and venerating it as a cultural emblem\, each artwork acts as an independent lens through which we can grasp many intimate and unique aspects of the artists’ ties to this city. The convergence of these artists and their work welcomes you to understand\, admire and connect to themes that are constant and central to their lives: inner child memories\, the honoring of family lineage\, intersectional community\, religious and spiritual reverence\, stories of loss and love\, and fragments of their everyday lives. \n\n\n\nDocumented through a zine publication\, Rooted seeks to uplift these women’s stories as artists and their interconnected spirit driven by creativity\, the love they hold for San Francisco\, and the passion they have for their work. Join us in celebrating this remarkable intersection of art and identity\, as we share the depths of inspiration found within the hearts of Frisco. \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists: Natalie Alemán\, Alyssa Aviles\, Emilia Baria\, Guadalupe Cabrera\, Yuriko Castillian\, Morgan Corbitt\, Elissa Jiménez\, Vero Majano\, Johanna Martinez-Aguilera\, Milly Millions\, Kassandra Lissette Pintor\, Xochitl Priscilla\, Anna Raquel\, Abryana Rodriguez\, Aztaxelli Vargas and María Fernanda Vizcaino. \n\n\n\nRooted is curated by Xochitl Priscilla\, a grantee of Galería de la Raza’s 2024 ReGen Artist Fund. SUMMARY:"Cuerpos en Transito" Performance
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza is proud to present a preview of Migratory Identities Series: Bodies in Transit by actress and performance artist Violeta Luna. \n\n\n\nMigratory Identities Series: Bodies in Transit/Cuerpos en Transito is a work-in-progress collage of actions\, focused on the complex subject of immigration from the southern border of the U.S.\, its extreme politicization\, and gender and institutional violence. \n\n\n\nThese issues are illuminated with testimonies of women who have had to leave their places of origin in Latin America to migrate to the North to reinvent themselves and make this country their new home. \n\n\n\nWomen are the fastest growing demographic of displaced peoples. However\, they remain largely invisible\, or attacked by an extremely dehumanizing misogynistic and anti-immigrant rhetoric\, unprecedented in our contemporary times\, evoking the worst of the Hitlerian discourse of the 20th century. \n\n\n\nBodies in Transit proposes actions to articulate a response to this toxic rhetoric broadcasted by central power with a poetics of resistance from the peripheries\, seeking to affirm collective solidarity\, and our deep and shared humanity. \n\n\n\nCome experience this timely performance and get a sneak peek of this body of work. \n\n\n\nPlease note: the performance begins at Balmy Alley off of 24th Street and is followed by a short procession up to Galería’s Studio 24.  \n\n\n\nEntrance Fee: To support the ongoing work of this project\, suggested donations can be made to the Mujeres Unidas y Activas \n\n\n\nCreative Team \n\n\n\nConcept/performer: Violeta Luna \n\n\n\nDramaturgy: Roberto Varea \n\n\n\nMusic and Sound design: David R. Molina  \n\n\n\nVideo: Vania Muñoz \n\n\n\nVisual art: Juana Inés Luna \n\n\n\nPercussionist: Edwin Ayala \n\n\n\nAcknowledgements: \n\n\n\nWe would like to thank all the women from the Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) organization\, and Casa Refugiados (CDMX)\, who with their testimonies have contributed to and inspired the creation of these actions. \n\n\n\nMujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) is a grassroots organization of Latina immigrant women with the dual mission of promoting personal transformation and building community power for social and economic justice. Since 1989\, MUA has created a safe haven for Latina immigrant women experiencing domestic violence\, poverty\, and exploitation. With offices in San Francisco and Oakland and a satellite program in Union City\, MUA provides a safe space where women can address basic needs and dismantle barriers of low self-esteem\, domestic violence\, and economic hardship that prevent them from recognizing their own potential to improve their living conditions and circumstances. \n\n\n\nCasa Refugiados A.C. is a secular\, non-partisan\, non-profit civil society organization based in Mexico City\, whose mission is to promote the rights of People on the Move (PEM in its Spanish acronym) displaced by violence (refugees\, asylum seekers\, displaced persons and migrants) with an emphasis on supporting better local integration through humanitarian programs and the animation of respectful and supportive environments\, within the framework of the dissemination of a culture of peace based on respect for Human Rights.
