SUMMARY:En Pie Lucha: Miro y Aprendo + The AO Series - Anna Colom & Nayelli Rosas
DESCRIPTION:Galería de la Raza is excited to present a double feature this summer showcasing the work and legacy of the late Rini Templeton in En Pie De Lucha: Miro y Aprendo\, and the second installment of The AO Seriesfeaturing ReGen grantees Anna Colom and Nayelli Rosas.  \n\n\n\n En Pie De Lucha: Miro y Aprendo\, co-curated with Ed McCaughn\, Galería marks the 40th anniversary of Templeton’s passing with a selection of original prints from the artist’s portfolio Donde hay vida y lucha\, printed in 1985 in collaboration with El Mixton\, a political collective of artists in Guadalajara. We explore her bold and graphic images of people fighting for justice\, working the fields\, or living life\, in conversation with a group of 40+ artists who answered a call from Espacio Zapata in Oaxaca\, Mexico to pay homage to Templeton and her commitment to capturing a people in service of social justice through art.  \n\n\n\nThe AO Series represents a significant investment in San Francisco’s creative arts sector\, directly funding 15 artists and regranting $250K over the past two years. This series highlights the work of six grantees\, offering the public an opportunity to experience the depth\, regenerative spirit\, and at times collaborative nature of each artist’s completed body of work. \n\n\n\nThese projects were made possible through the ReGen Artist Fund\, a small grants program that pairs financial support with professional development. In addition to funding\, participating artists receive training in grant writing and program planning\, equipping them to develop competitive proposals for future opportunities. The fund is as much a commitment to artistic growth as it is to community investment. DESCRIPTION:Gay Now\, Gay Later & Amor No Binario \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of conversation with the Anna Raquel & Nayelli Rosas the artist behind Gay Now\, Gay Later & Amor No Binario\, respectively.   \n\n\n\nThis conversation takes us through the creation and curation of each powerfully stunning art project that celebrate queer joy. Raquel & Rosas reflect on their exploration of gender expression\, safe placemaking\, and cultural ties; while amplifying the importance of queer visibility.  \n\n\n\nRSVP by clicking the button below. Seating priority will be given to early arrivals\, elders\, and people with disabilities. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Projects \n\n\n\nGay Now\, Gay Later explores tattooing as a form of community care\, queer expression\, and cultural storytelling within San Francisco’s queer Latinx communities. The project reinterprets the classic Chicano phrase “Smile Now\, Cry Later” — popularized through Chicano tattoo culture and artist Freddy Negrete — to center queer Latino identities and experiences through Chicano-style tattooing. \n\n\n\nRooted in the artist’s Latina heritage\, queer identity\, and Bay Area upbringing\, the work combines Chicano and American traditional tattoo aesthetics with queer visual culture. Through hand-drawn tattoo flash sheets\, documentary-style video\, and film photography\, the project highlights themes of gender affirmation\, bodily autonomy\, self-expression\, and collective healing. One flash sheet references drag\, ballroom\, and leather cultures\, while another draws from San Francisco iconography including Victorian houses\, local wildlife\, area codes\, and street culture. \n\n\n\nDeveloped through free tattoo sessions with queer BIPOC participants across neighborhoods such as the Mission District\, Tenderloin\, Bayview\, and Excelsior\, the project foregrounds tattooing as an intimate\, service-based practice rooted in storytelling and human connection. Participants shared how tattoos can memorialize personal histories\, affirm identity\, and create confidence and belonging. By documenting these experiences\, Gay Now\, Gay Later positions the body as an archive and tattooing as a practice of visibility\, care\, and cultural preservation. \n\n\n\nAmor No Binario explores the intersections of queer identity\, relationships\, and cultural expectations within the Latinx community in the Bay Area. Through interviews and portrait photography\, Rosas documents the lived experiences of six queer Latinx participants with diverse identities\, including nonbinary\, femme\, masc\, and trans individuals. \n\n\n\nCentered on storytelling and intimacy\, the project combines hour-long recorded conversations with portraits created in spaces personally meaningful to each participant. Emerging from discussions around queer love\, chosen family\, gender exploration\, rejection and acceptance\, public visibility\, and intergenerational memory\, the work examines how identity is shaped through culture\, environment\, and community. \n\n\n\nThe resulting photo series captures moments of vulnerability\, confidence\, and connection while reflecting resistance to restrictive ideas surrounding gender\, sexuality\, and cultural norms within Latinx communities. Clothing\, jewelry\, religious objects\, and personal style become visual markers of memory\, nostalgia\, and self-expression. SUMMARY:Am I Next? Community Photo Session
DESCRIPTION:Am I Next? is a public declaration against repression and silence in the face of growing injustice in the United States. What began as a response to immigration raids has become a broader stand against racialized targeting and the erosion of civil liberties. \n\n\n\nAm I Next? is collaborating with Galería de la Raza to have San Franciscans join in solidarity and resistance with individuals held in detention centers throughout the country. With this public art campaign\, we invite the public to join in a collective call to action to denounce the incarceration and family separation being inflicted on our undocumented communities\, neighbors and allies.  \n\n\n\nJoin the movement! Galería will be hosting a community photo session at Festival de las Américas where you can be part of this campaign. With photos taken by Alexa Treviño\, help us bring real faces and stories to create a moment of solidarity and visibility towards a collective act of resistance. El pueblo salva al pueblo.  \n\n\n\nAll ages and genders are welcome. All individuals must give written consent and understand the goals of the project to participate. DESCRIPTION:For the past 25 years\, Lunada Literary Lounge has gathered on the full moon to honor spoken word\, poetry\, musica\, and literatura. On its silver anniversary\, Galería will instead gather under the new moon\, holding three seasonal gatherings; the final gathering on October 10\, 2026.  \n\n\n\nAlthough shrouded in darkness\, the new moon signifies new beginnings\, limitless possibilities\, and rejuvenation.This lunar phase allows us to set intentions with a blank slate\, and give ourselves and our community moments to re-energize with art and the words of our community during destabilization and high anxiety.  \n\n\n\nJoin Galería de la Raza on Saturday\, October 10 at Studio 24 for the final installment of Lunada New Moon Fest!  \n\n\n\nFree admission. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Feature \n\n\n\nRepresenting Redwood City and the Bay Area\, poet\, emcee\, and truth messenger\, Know Expressions? discovered poetry through hip hop at the age of 8 years old\, and there has been no turning back. Gravitating to all the elements of hip hop\, MC-ing was his primary outlet; hip hop was his poetry; writing and performing became his therapy. Influenced by experience and street narratives\, he continues to carry on the tradition by sharing authentic lyrics with an objective to uplift\, motivate\, and put a stop to all wack MC’s. All while being thankful for the Pioneers who’ve paved the way for the hip hop community.
