About Galeria's Internship Opportunities  

Galería de la Raza offers internship opportunities for college and graduate students interested in careers in the arts. Based upon their academic training and interests, as well as the availability of projects, interns work in one of the Galería's departments—curatorial, education, development, administration, or archives. Applicants of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Internship opportunities are on a rolling basis.

Spring 2013 intern applications are now closed. Summer 2013 applications (June-August) will start to be accepted on May 20. 

 

1. Development Intern

The Development Department seeks an enthusiastic Intern to assist with special projects and day-to-day operations. An interest in non-profits and fundraising is especially desirable. The Development Intern will help with administrative projects, assist with electronic mailings, respond to inquiries, table our development table at performances, perform internet research, maintaining publicity files including copying and filing articles, correspondence and information related to exhibitions and press; telephoning press to establish and maintain contact, providing press materials to media contacts and facilitating interviews; entering and updating data (mailing lists, contact info, etc.) into electronic databases and other computer-based systems; preparing press clippings; preparing and mailing press releases and press kits; generating correspondences; and miscellaneous projects.

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Familiarity with MS Office for both Mac and PC; Photoshop and Illustrator a PLUS
  • Familiarity with HTML & Dreamweaver
  • Internet savvy
  • Uncanny attention to detail
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong telephone skills

The number of hours and schedule are flexible, however, we would like to have at minimum a three-month commitment and be available for 6-10 hours a week. 2. Graphic Design Intern (position currently closed)

Galeria de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated graphic design intern. Passionate about design, committed to creating concept-driven, imaginative, and relevant work that lives up to the Galeria’s standards of creativity, this is a great opportunity to expand your portfolio and work with a cutting edge Latina arts organization. Projects are varied and range from simple production projects to conceptual work for brochures, invitations, posters, signage, event promotions and more. Daily responsibilities may involve any of the following; research, brainstorming, sketching, design development, design implementation, photo manipulation, and design production.

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator on a Mac platform
  •  Strong typographic skills
  •  Strong eye for detail
  •  Ability to efficiently organize, prioritize and multi-task
  •  Strong interpersonal skills: communicates clearly, takes direction well
  •  Must have or be working toward a BA in graphic design

3. Marketing and Web Intern

Galeria de la Raza has an immediate opening for a talented and motivated Marketing and Web intern. We are looking for a creative, energetic and web savvy person to help us get our marketing plans up and running via the web and other online portals. This is a great position for someone looking to expand their online marketing skills. The ideal person is both swift at shifting gears to adapt to new roles and situations as well as able to maintain their equilibrium in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing general administrative support for web; assist with other Marketing duties as needed
  • Building HTML-formatted emails and deploy via custom e-blast system on a frequent basis
  • Creating and manipulate graphics for use in e-blasts and web
  • Formatting and upload media files to multiple websites
  • Assisting with other website maintenance as needed
  • Performing routine content updates and maintenance to Galeria de la Raza web site under the direction of the webmaster.

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer-related field or 2 years experience in web technology
  • Strong grasp of (X)HTML, CSS, Photoshop; Comfortable grasp of Javascript, MS Office; Understanding of media file format conversion (m4a/v, flv, etc.)
  • Proven skill in design and composition for the Web
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Proficiency with both Mac and PC computer systems and software
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with minimum supervision
  • Able to work effectively and professionally with all co-workers, staff, clients and the public; presents a positive image of the Galeria de la Raza
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in partnership with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, contemporary art ideal, but not required

4. Technology & Archive Internship

Galería is looking for Technology Interns to support our Youth Media Program (YMP). The program currently trains under-served Mission youth in community arts with a strong footing in digital media. Youth gain strong conceptual art skills as well as video, photo and media know-how. Interns will ensure that all the equipment is in working condition; coordinating software updates, archiving student projects, checking equipment in and out for instructors and prepping classroom space. The internship will be between 6-10 hours per week, mostly day hours, but some evening hours for special public programs. The goal of the internship is to provide an extensive view of day to day computer lab maintenance and hardware and software troubleshooting.

Skills Required:

- Some college is preferred but not required.

- Interest in a mixed OS administration environment

- Experience with Adobe Creative Suites

- Interest in new and upcoming technology

- Ability to work independently to further your knowledge
